๐Ÿชฑ Let's get one thing straight: soil โ‰  dirt

Sand, clay, silt? That's just dead mineral, honey. That's "dirt." Sad little dirt.

Soil, though โ€” ooh, soil is that mineral plus a whole living party underneath you: billions of microbes, fungal threads, worms, wigglers, the works. That's why good soil feels light and crumbly in your hands โ€” all those little creatures need room to breathe, same as the rest of us.

Bottom line: dirt is dead. Soil is alive. We came here to live. โœ…

๐Ÿ•ธ๏ธ So what even is this "soil food web"?

Okay picture this: an invisible little food network right under your feet. Everybody's eating everybody, it's chaos, it's beautiful โ€” and the plant? The plant's running the whole show, quietly, like a boss.

When that network's healthy, it does five things for you โ€” for free, no strings:

  • ๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Fights off disease โ€” toss the pesticides, you won't need 'em
  • ๐Ÿ”’ Holds onto nutrients โ€” nothing slips away
  • ๐Ÿฝ๏ธ Delivers nutrients โ€” right when the plant's hungry (that's your flavor, your vitamins)
  • โ™ป๏ธ Breaks down toxins โ€” the microbes clean up the mess like little angels
  • ๐Ÿ—๏ธ Builds structure โ€” less water, deeper roots, stronger everything

A plant needs 42 nutrients to thrive. The soil food web handles every single one. Don't ask me how, they just do. ๐Ÿคฏ

๐Ÿ‘ฅ Meet the band

Five headliners, sweetheart. Learn their names, 'cause they're doing all the heavy lifting while we sip our coffee.

๐Ÿฆ  The bacteria โ€” the chemist

Tiny little things, busier than me on tour. They break stuff down and make glue that sticks the sand grains together โ€” the little building blocks of your soil. They nudge the soil a touch more alkaline.

Wild fact: one teaspoon of healthy soil is holding 100 million to a billion of 'em โ€” like 75,000 species. One. Teaspoon. I can't even. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

๐Ÿ„ The fungi โ€” the highway

Fungi grow as long threads (hyphae) that sneak in everywhere โ€” nosy, in the best way. They chew through the tough, woody stuff and haul water and nutrients across long distances. They're basically the internet of the soil. ๐ŸŒ They tip the soil a little more acidic.

Remember this one, flowers: fungi are slow to bounce back after you rough 'em up. Tilling and fungicides? Heartbreak for this whole network.

๐Ÿค The mycorrhiza โ€” the plant's ride-or-die

A special fungus that plugs right into the roots and gives the plant a massive reach for water and food. More than 80% of all plants are in on this friendship.

โš ๏ธ Listen up: this one does NOT survive composting โ€” it needs a living root. Mix it in right when you're seeding, straight onto the seed or root. Don't forget your bestie.

๐Ÿ’ง The protozoa โ€” the delivery driver

Little blobs that gobble up bacteria โ€” up to 10,000 a day, greedy little cuties. ๐Ÿ” And when they, uh, go? Out comes plant-ready food, dropped off right at the root. (Hang tight โ€” the Poop Loop's coming.)

๐Ÿ› The nematode โ€” the mini-worm

Teeny microscopic worm. The good ones munch bacteria and fungi and drop off nitrogen right at the plant's doorstep. (There's troublemakers too, the kind that chew roots โ€” you'll catch 'em under the microscope by their little โ€œspear with a knob on it.โ€ Sneaky.)

๐Ÿ•ท๏ธ The microarthropods โ€” the cleanup crew

Mites and springtails that shred everything up and dig the big tunnels in the soil โ€” the highways where air and water get to cruise. ๐Ÿ›ฃ๏ธ Roadies of the underground, basically.

๐Ÿ• The Poop Loop (the most genius trick nature ever pulled)

Okay THIS is the heart of it, the whole song right here. Ready? Here's how a plant feeds itself with zero fertilizer:

  1. ๐ŸŒฑ The plant makes sugar with photosynthesis and pumps up to 40% of it straight out its roots. Generous queen.
  2. ๐Ÿฌ Those sugars are like "cookies and cake" โ€” every recipe calls in exactly the microbes the plant's craving right now.
  3. ๐Ÿฆ  Bacteria & fungi come running for the snacks and mine nutrients out of the mineral โ€” then stash it all in their little bodies.
  4. ๐Ÿ’ง๐Ÿ› Protozoa & nematodes eat those microbes right up.
  5. ๐Ÿ’ฉ They poop out the leftovers as plant-ready food, dropped right at the root.
  6. ๐ŸŒฑ Plant feasts. Do it again. Free forever. โ™ป๏ธ
Dr. Ingham calls it a pizza delivery service โ€” the plant phones in its order with sugars, and dinner shows up right at the door. And honestly? Iconic. ๐Ÿ›ต

๐ŸŒ "But my soil's all used up, right?"

Nah, babe. Here's the plot twist from Ingham after 100,000+ soil samples: not one single mineral is actually gone. The stash locked up in your sand, clay, and rock is enormous. ๐Ÿ’Ž

Your soil sitting above 3% organic matter? Then all the nutrients are already down there, waiting. What's missing isn't the food โ€” it's the biology to unlock the pantry.

And fertilizer? ๐Ÿ‘‰ About 80% of it just washes away into the groundwater. The Poop Loop loses nothing. Pick your battles, sweetheart. ๐Ÿ˜…

๐Ÿชœ Weeds, veggies, or trees? It's all in the ratio

Big brain moment: the fungi-to-bacteria ratio decides which plants throw the best party. And that ratio shifts as your soil gets older and richer, like a good vintage.

๐Ÿฆ  Bacteria โ†’ alkaline โ†’ nitrogen turns to nitrate โ†’ weeds are obsessed with this.

Here's the tea: weeds aren't a problem, they're a symptom. Too much bacteria, not enough fungi. Want fewer weeds? Feed your fungi โ€” put the spray bottle down. ๐Ÿง 

โš”๏ธ The villains (aka what's wrecking your soil)

  • ๐Ÿšœ Tilling/digging โ€” wipes out about 50% of your critters in one pass, shreds the fungi, and leaves a squished, airless layer. Rude.
  • ๐Ÿงช Fungicide โ€” kills the good fungi faster than the bad guys (the bad guys went and got resistant ๐Ÿ™ƒ).
  • ๐ŸŒฟ Herbicide โ€” kills fungi โ†’ ratio drops โ†’ perfect weed conditions. It's a toxic cycle, and not the fun kind.
  • ๐Ÿง‚ Fertilizer โ€” it's salt, it beats up your microbes, it washes away, and it makes plants lazy (why work when dinner just appears?).

๐Ÿ’ช Structure & water (why crumbly soil is a whole vibe)

Your microbes literally build the soil, layer by layer, like a slow jam:

๐Ÿฆ  glue โ†’ little crumbs โ†’ ๐Ÿ„ fungal threads glue 'em together โ†’ ๐Ÿ›๐Ÿ•ท๏ธ critters dig the big tunnels.

The result: soil like fluffy chocolate cake ๐Ÿซ that drinks water right up instead of letting it run off, and lets roots dive deep.

  • ๐Ÿ’ง Organic matter holds about 10ร— its own weight in water. Thirsty little sponge.
  • ๐ŸŒพ Roots go deeper than you'd ever guess: rye over a meter in 4 months; some conifer roots reaching 75+ meters down. Legends.
  • ๐Ÿšซ Compaction = no oxygen = alcohol in the soil, and roots turn to mush at just 1 ppm. So stay off those wet beds and never stomp around in your bed. ๐Ÿ™…

โ™จ๏ธ Making compost that's actually alive

Compost is how you grow the good critters and hand 'em out at the door. Ingham's all about that hot (thermal) compost with plenty of air in the mix.

Recipe by volume (roughly):

  • ๐ŸŸค 60% woody/brown stuff
  • ๐ŸŸข 30% green stuff
  • ๐Ÿ’ฉ 10% nitrogen-rich (manure / food scraps)

(More wood = more fungal ๐Ÿ„ ยท more green/nitrogen = more bacterial ๐Ÿฆ )

The rules, flowers:

  • ๐Ÿ’จ Keep it breathing. It stinks? Turn it. Black, smelly compost's gone anaerobic and it'll hurt your plants.
  • ๐ŸŒก๏ธ Let it get HOT (~55ย ยฐC / ~130ย ยฐF) to knock out pathogens and weed seeds. Fold the outside back in.
  • ๐Ÿ’ง Moist, not soggy. Wrung-out sponge, not swimming pool.
  • No time or space? Worm compost or a cold pile (~50/50 wood chips + green waste) does the job too.

๐Ÿซ– Compost tea (a smoothie for your microbes)

Grab a little scoop of your best compost and multiply those critters by brewing it in aerated, chlorine-free water with a little microbe snack.

  • โฑ๏ธ Brew ~24โ€“36 hours and use it right away (before the oxygen taps out).
  • ๐Ÿฅฆ For veggies/grass โ†’ go bacteria-friendly (kelp, manure).
  • ๐ŸŒณ For shrubs/trees โ†’ go fungi-friendly (woody stuff, fish hydrolysate).
  • ๐Ÿ‘ƒ Should smell like fresh coffee. Smells nasty? Pour it out, no regrets.
  • ๐Ÿ’ฆ Use it as a soil drench or a foliar spray. On the leaves, the microbes coax the little stomata open โ†’ the plant drinks the good stuff up.
Bonus flex: in a Tasmanian onion trial, the compost-tea fields had almost no weeds and grew bigger onions than the Roundup fields. Nature: 1, chemicals: 0. ๐Ÿง…

๐Ÿ”ฌ Check your soil (it's actually so fun, trust me)

Grab yourself a light microscope (~$350 with a camera) and see it with your own eyes instead of guessing in the dark.

Here's the move: ~1 gram of soil or compost in a little water โ†’ a drop on a slide โ†’ peek at 100ร— and 400ร—. Count your bacteria, measure the fungal threads, spot your protozoa, nematodes, and mites. It's a whole underground world down there. ๐Ÿ”Ž

Little tip: take a look ~2 weeks after each compost-tea round, so you get to watch your progress grow. ๐Ÿ“ˆ

โœ… Your game plan for gorgeous soil

  1. ๐Ÿ”Ž Look at what's in your soil right now (microscope).
  2. ๐ŸŽฏ Know what your plant's after (where's it sitting on the fungi/bacteria ladder?).
  3. ๐Ÿงบ Grab the missing critters from top compost or healthy local soil.
  4. ๐Ÿ’ฆ Hand 'em out via compost, extract, or tea.

And keep it easy, breezy:

  • ๐ŸŒฟ Never leave soil bare โ€” always tuck it in with plants or mulch.
  • ๐Ÿšœ Quit the tilling and the spraying. Cold turkey.
  • ๐ŸŒฑ Plant deep-rooted cover crops โ€” they bust up compaction from the inside.
  • ๐Ÿก Local beats a store-bought bag โ€” your own microbes fit your soil best, always.

๐Ÿค” Real talk before you go

Ingham's approach is huge in the regenerative world, and I'm here for it โ€” but not every scientist agrees on every little thing. Some researchers push back on how precisely you can measure species and biomass with a light microscope, and how tightly you can really steer that fungi/bacteria ratio.
